Are LED Lights the Bright Choice?

Unless you have been living under a rock somewhere, then you have most likely heard of the latest and greatest in home lighting. The days of incandescent bulbs are long gone. The new lighting choice for many people is something that is called LED.

What Is LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. LEDs were originally used in computers to tell people whether or not something was working properly. Over the years huge improvements have been made with LED technology and LED lights are now some of the most energy efficient lighting sources known to man.

Here is a good example. If you were to compare a regular incandescent bulb to an LED bulb, you would see a huge difference in how they convert energy to light. An incandescent bulb will only convert about 20% of the energy to light. By comparison, an LED light will convert 80% of its energy to light. That is a huge difference. Even though the initial cost of an LED bulb may seem high, the usage savings will quickly start to add up.

Should You Switch to LED?

It is not really a matter of should you switch. It is more a matter of when you should do it. Making the switch now will save you plenty of money on your energy costs down the road. One of the most popular consumer brands of LED lighting is Lighting EVER LED Bulbs. They offer superior savings on usage, and they also last much longer than a traditional incandescent bulb.

What About Sizes?

There is an LED bulb that will fit every size outlet that you can think of. Choose from:

●     MR16

●     E27

●     GU10

●     B22

●     E14

●     candle light

●     MR11

●     G9

●     G4

The days of incandescent lighting are looking very dark. Replace your lighting with energy efficient LED bulbs.

Affordable Home Decorating

Home decorating can be very costly particularly when it is advisable to replace a number of things. DIY or Do It Yourself is not going to only pertain to wedding functions but in home decorating to boot. In this way, it will save you unwanted expense in the decorating process.

Please read on for some fabulous ways that you might update your home’s style and look and feel.

Using captivating colors is among the top ways to update your home. Instead of purchasing wallpaper, you can save a lot of money by painting the walls, floors, or ceilings. Please remember that you will need to use paints that are resistant against mold and mildew in the bathroom and kitchen areas. This particular paint may very well cost a tad bit more but it really can tolerate fluctuating temperatures and should last for a long time. Another important thing in choosing the right shade of paint is to consider the effect from light such as sunlight and fluorescent lighting. Considering the effect of light is as important as lighting can substantially affect the appearance of your home at different times of the day.

Your choice of lighting tends to make your room seem to be larger or smaller than it is actually. Unless you have visited with an interior decorator in the past, you may not be aware of this. For example, adding a light in a particular area of the room can make the room appear to be smaller than it really is. Although light is necessary for a home to work for you correctly, the appropriate lighting can also cultivate certain feelings and emotions. It’s possible you’ll wish to use dim lights in case you have problems sleeping in bright light or maximum darkness.

Previously, we described how the brightness of lighting can make a room look to be bigger or smaller than it actually is. Another beautifying technique is the use of mirrors to add volume to the appearance of narrow corridors. Using mirrors by doing this might appear to double the width of the existing area.

Household decorating can be an extremely enjoyable pursuit. Instead of replacing the ceramic tiles in your kitchen space you may want to paint them another color or shade? All you need are many different colorful shades of ceramic paint and some paint brushes. Be sure to clean the tiles and additionally clear away any grease. Then you can just begin by painting any kind of styles and patterns you want. A few well-liked kitchen designs are vegetables and species of fish.

Your own home decorating doesn’t always have to be expensive. You don’t need an interior decorator to redesign home’s decor. By using easy steps, you can make a impressive change for your home.

How secure is your home?

We all need to ask ourselves that question. With the economy being what it is, unemployment being so high, and cutbacks in law enforcement, crime is on the rise and will continue to rise for the foreseeable future. Burglary and home invasion seem to be the most popular crimes because once inside the home, it is unlikely that anyone outside will notice.

My name is Craig, and I’m a professional locksmith in California. I’m in peoples homes every day to deal with their security issues whether it’s re-keying a home they just purchased or installing additional dead bolts or locks. I see how many folks overlook simple, inexpensive, but effective ways to better secure their homes. Unfortunately, some of the calls I get are to secure a home after it’s been burglarized or invaded.

I’m going to tell you a few things you can do to make your home as safe it can be without major structural changes and great expense. Your neighbors would most likely complain about barbed wire and dogs patrolling your perimeter, so I’ll try to keep it real.

Most of us have locking knobs and dead bolts on our outside doors. You should have both on every door that goes to the outside from your house.

The first thing you should do is check the screws that hold the door hinges to the frame on all your outside doors. Remove just one of the hinge screws from the door frame. Odds are, it’s 3/4″ long. If it’s 3 inches long, put it back. It’s as good as it gets. If it’s a short one, replace it with a 3 inch long screw. One at a time, (so the hinges don’t move) replace all the screws in all the hinges in your door frame. The longer screws will go THROUGH the frame and into the studs. They may sheer off under stress, but they won’t just pull out like the short ones will from the pine frame.

Let’s talk about your front door. A locking knob and a dead bolt are the LEAST amount of protection you should have. If there’s decorative glass in your door or down the sides, you run an additional risk that a burglar could simply break the glass, reach in, and unlock the door. There is a dead bolt ( a double cylinder dead bolt) which takes a key to lock or unlock from both the inside and outside of the door which could solve this problem, but they’re against building codes in most parts of the country because of the danger in a fire situation; if you can’t find the key, you can’t get out.

You should also have both knob locks and dead bolts on the door from your home to your attached garage (particularly if you have an automatic garage door opener). I once lived in a home where the garage door opened whenever my neighbor across the street opened his. There are people who drive neighborhoods pushing a garage door opener just to see who’s door will come up. Could you be a winner?

I have a door from my garage to my side yard. It’s the one place someone could take their time to break in without being seen by neighbors or passers by. They could do it in the back yard, but not without breaking glass which is noisy.

So let’s talk about those sliding glass doors and windows. No matter what kind of factory locking devise you have on these, you should either install a pin that goes through the frame and track together, or lay a length of wood or metal, like a broom handle or piece of X in the track. These can’t be disabled from the outside.

Please understand that if someone wants to get into your home badly enough, they will. My goal here is to make sure that you leave no quiet entry possible for an intruder to surprise you. Glass is the weak point in any home but it’s noisy when it breaks. With today’s cordless power tools, it’s not that hard to simply cut a hole in your wood door, reach through, and unlock it, or simply kick the door in. But these all make noise which should alert someone inside that someone is breaking in.

Alarm systems are great, but some are quite expensive. The downside to an alarm is that it usually tells you that someone is already in your house, and perhaps calls the police for you. Has anyone called for police assistance lately? My hat is off to the men and women in law enforcement, but there are way too few of them to respond quickly to all of us.

One of the best deterrents is a motion activated light on each side of your house. They are simple to install, inexpensive, and available at any home improvement store. The brighter the better.

So you’ve made your home as secure as you can. You’ve installed motion activated lights on all sides of the house, replaced the hinge screws, put slide blocks in all the windows and sliding glass doors. Maybe you’ve even set the alarm.

So… Here we go…. Someone is trying to come through your front door while you and the family are watching TV. If they kick the door in, you’ve got about 5 seconds to respond before they’re looking at you face to face. What are you going to do? Honestly, that isn’t enough time to do ANYTHING. You need more time. You need more than a lock and dead bolt on your door.

The problem:

Almost all doors in homes built since the 1970′s are “pre hung” doors. They’re pre hung in the factory in a 3/4 inch pine frame. The hinges and hardware are all mounted to a piece of 3/4 inch thick piece of pine. It’s very soft wood. The entire frame is then installed in the door opening and screwed or nailed to the studs. You need to understand that the most expensive highest quality dead bolt installed like this is only as strong as the piece of pine wood that holds it. A good kick or strong shoulder can cause it to fail fairly easily.

There’s not much you can do about this weakness, so, I developed a security bar for my doors we call the bar-arcade. Whether you pick my locks, use a key, or break the door frame, you won’t come through my doors quickly once the bar is in place. It’s made from a square tubular steel bar which is incredibly strong, and the 5/16 inch specially flanged lag bolts are screwed to the JACK STUDS, not the door frame. They mount on any door with no cutting of the casing or trim just using a drill and a 1/2 inch wrench. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes. Even if you rent your home or have an apartment, you can use the bar-arcade because it leaves only a screw hole on each side which can be filled with a little putty and a touch of paint. Go to my website to watch a short video about how it works.

It will give you MINUTES or more to respond where you only had SECONDS!

My plan is to retreat to the bedroom where I have access to my guns and a cordless phone to call for help. Whenever possible, whether for fire, ambulance, or police, call for help from your land line phone. The emergency services know where that call is coming from even if you don’t have time to tell them. Your cell phone doesn’t give them that information.

Once my family and I are in for the evening, I simply slide the bar onto the bolts. To go out, simply lift it out and set it in the corner. If someone really wants to get in my house, I’ll know well before they succeed, and I’ll have time to follow my plan, get my gun, and call for help. Now, I’m in control.

Take all the steps you can NOW to keep it from happening to your family.

How to Start a Home Decor Business for Profit

Love home decorating? Then a Home Decor Home Business is something you want to know about. Interior decorating has exploded in the years since 9/11 as people began seeking security and comfort in their homes. And home decorating businesses have benefited tremendously.

There are some home decorating businesses that are part of the home show business trend. You sign up as a sales representative with a company specializing in home decor or home decorating products and have shows where you present the items–and sale them. You can offer these shows in your own home or go into other people’s homes and give them. These shows can be a great deal of fun and are a way of having your own home decor business. If you’re a little unsure of your abilities or afraid of getting in over your head as you start your home decorating business, this could be a good home decorating businesses opportunity for you.

If, however, you’re more independent and have a flair for interior decorating, you may want to start a home decorating business all your own. You don’t have to go for entire home overhauls, either. You can specialize in draperies, kitchen remodeling, carpeting, art and accessories, or color scheme choices, just to name a few, as the focus of your home decor home business. The possibilities are as endless as your home decorating ideas for the home decor home business concept.

As you start your home decor home business, some contacts you’ll want to make are with:

Interior designers
Home builders and contractors
Art galleries
Carpet companies
Paint companies
Antique dealers
Thrift stores
Surplus stores
Arts and crafts stores
Lighting specialists
Furniture stores and dealers

Why, you ask, do I need contacts with businesses like these? Because they know people who may need the services of a home decor home business. They can spread the word about your business and put you in touch with prospective clients. Which means you can get to work more quickly, and often with more upscale clients than you could reach on your own, especially when you’re just starting a home decor home business.

Now some questions to ask yourself before you run off to tell that antique dealer you love so much about your new home decor home business are:

Do I have space in my home for an office and the necessary supplies?
Is my family supportive of my having a home decor home business?
What will I do about accounting?
Where are my special skills and talents?
Do I enjoy this kind of work?
What are the zoning regulations concerning home businesses for my neighborhood?
What’s the competition in my area?
Is my area saturated with interior decorators and designers?
If it is, can I find a way to work with them on a commission basis, perhaps?
Do I need to take courses or get a certification of some kind?

Ask yourself lots of questions about the “business” side of having a home decor home business. When turning a hobby or passion into a business, it’s easy to forget the itty-gritty details like how you will pay your taxes. Don’t let your excitement and enthusiasm get you in over your head.

Because it will be a business. And you’ll need to think like a business person and make a business plan for your home decor home business. So think things through carefully. Do a lot of research, and find out all you can about a home decorating business and a home decor business.

Learn what people are looking for right now in terms of interior decorating. You may love country home decorating, but the people in your area may be on an Oriental or Southwestern home decorating kick. Go to furniture stores and see what they’re stocking. Talk with owners about what’s hot and what they think will be next season.

And after you’ve done all these things, by all means, run off to tell that antique dealer all about your new home decor home business. He or she may have just the right person in mind for your first client.
